Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of Europe’s most fascinating destinations, as well as a thriving business hub in the heart of the Balkans. This small and dynamic city, which is the country’s social, political, economic and cultural centre, is located on the Miljacka River and nestled in a valley, surrounded by the stunning Dinaric Alps. The city boasts a rich heritage and history, with the old town, Bascarsija, dating back to Turkish Ottoman rule and home to landmarks such as the Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque, the historic marketplace and the famous Sebilj fresh water fountain. Reminders of when Sarajevo was part of the Austro/Hungarian Empire are also evident in the city’s architecture and documented at the Museum of Sarajevo 1878–1918, which tells the story of the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand - an event that sparked World War I. Sarajevo is also a modern mini metropolis, with shopping malls and restaurants showcasing the best of Bosnian and international cuisine, as well as beautiful parks and green spaces including Vrelo Bosne park on the River Bosne, Veliki Park, which is popular with families and Wilson’s Promenade, built by the Austro-Hungarians and the place to jog, roller skate, cycle, or just take a stroll.
