Makkah is a city of unique discoveries and the place which captures the hearts of a billion Muslims all over the globe. Set between rugged mountains, Makkah, in western Saudi Arabia,is glittered with quaint mosques and minarets that are graced by thousands of pilgrims. The city is considered one of the holiest cities in the Islamic world and was the birth city of Muhammad, the founder of Islam. It is surrounded by the Sirāt Mountains. Masjid al-Haram At the heart of the city is Masjid al-Haram, the largest mosque in the world. The mosque is also known as ‘The Great Mosque’, ‘The Holy Mosque’ or ‘Haram Mosque’, and was built to safeguard the Ka’bah, the holiest shrine in Islam. The area around the Great Mosque makes up the old city and is compact and somewhat built up. This area stretches to the north and south-west, but the mountains restrict it from expanding on the east and west. To the north of the mosque are the main avenues of Al-Mudda`ah and Sūq al-Layl, and to the south of the mosque the main avenue is Al-Sūq al Saghīr. SOMA ZAIDI |
